The four steps to bone loss treatment using the bone grafting process
Bone grafting is a procedure provided by a periodontist at Pasadena Periodontics in Pasadena, California, to restore the smile when issues like bone loss have occurred alongside periodontitis. Severe stages of this condition can cause both gum and bone loss, which needs to be addressed as soon as possible to ensure the protection of the remaining teeth and tissues. If you need bone grafting, we invite you to talk to Drs. Joel Henriod, Tyler Hendry, and Jane Law about the steps required in this process.
- Initial diagnosis and assessment. Before the team at our office can perform bone grafting, we must evaluate the smile and determine if it is necessary. The patients who can benefit the most from bone grafting are patients who have experienced bone loss due to periodontal disease, tooth extraction, or trauma. During the initial diagnosis and assessment, we take a series of dental X-rays and use other diagnostic tools to determine the extent of bone loss and identify any underlying issues that may need to be addressed before proceeding with the procedure.
- Preparation for surgery. Once it has been determined that bone grafting is necessary, the next step is to prepare for surgery. This might involve scheduling a specific date for the procedure, discussing potential risks or complications, and providing instructions for both before and after the surgery. Patients need to follow these instructions closely to ensure a successful outcome.
- Bone grafting. During the bone grafting procedure, bone or a bone substitute is placed at the site of the missing or damaged bone. The material used will depend on the patient’s needs and goals. This can include using a piece of bone from another part of the body, synthetic graft materials, or donated human tissue.
- Recovery and aftercare. After the procedure, our patients must follow specific care and recovery instructions. These might include keeping weight off the affected area, taking pain medication as prescribed, and attending follow-up appointments to monitor progress and healing. It is critical to closely follow these instructions to ensure proper healing and reduce the potential risk of complications.
